Rodney and one of his many friends
at The History Place

Although Rodney Kemp cheerfullly admits he is from "off" he truly grew up in Morehead City and this is home. After gradutation from Texas Tech [with a triple major in English, Journalism and History], he returned to "home" and taught high school history for fifteen years. He currently is employed by Chalk and Gibbs Insurance Company and teaches a community college course at night on Carteret County History at the History Place. This current event sponsored by Sound Bank is a very special opportunity. We get both great food AND great entertainment for free. It just doesn't get any better! Thanks again, Sound Bank.

Our first Sesquicentennial event, a series of "Evenings with Rodney and Friends" is over, and the final countdown to Morehead City's 150th birthday party continues.

Our final "Rodney and Friends" was held on Harkers Island at the Core Sound Waterfowl Museum as part of their ongoing Community Nights. Rodney's panel included Bob Guthrie, Maxine Lynch, Caroline Melke and Libbie Arendell. The discussion centered around Morehead City folks, many of whom are "kin" to families down east and how the two communities share common values. It was an evening of wonderful fellowship and delicious food.

Earlier Rodney said
, “During our weekly meetings we talk about a lot of significant historical information about Morehead City. We came up with the idea to inspire and inform the public for the Sesquicentennial celebration by holding monthly evening meetings. I will interview a panel of our committee members to discuss things that have happened in Morehead since 1957 in addition to things prior to 1957. Planned topics include the growth of churches, businesses, the population shifts and their effect on the environment, the continued expansion in Morehead and the changes that have taken place here.”

Rodney's panel of friends changed each month. The first panel was a great success, and included Bob Guthrie, Maxine Lynch. Reggie Lewis and Libby Arendell. Time-Warner videotaped several of our sessions and aired them on Channel 10. We wish these sessions could have gone on forever. Thank you Sound Bank for your generous sponsorship.
